When writing your essays, it is important that your paragraphs are cohesive. A paragraph is cohesive when all the sentences are relevant to the topic or idea discussed in the paragraph. Say, you are writing a paragraph on mobile phones:

Mobile phones are probably the most important means of communication today. The first mobile phone weighed about 2 kg. The mobile phones we use now are called smartphones. They are ‘smart’ because they have internet connectivity and a host of applications such as messaging service, calendar, photo albums, videos, and social media.

In this short paragraph, one sentence does not fit the topic being discussed. Every sentence refers to the mobile phone as a tool of communication except the second sentence: The first mobile phone weighed about 2 kg. Although it is about the mobile phone, its invention or the fact that it weighed 2 kg is not relevant to the topic discussed So, the cohesive paragraph should look like this:

Mobile phones are probably the most important means of communication today. The mobile phones we use now are called smartphones. They are ‘smart’ because they have internet connectivity and a host of applications such as messaging service, calendar, photo albums, videos, and social media.

To write a cohesive paragraph ask yourself two questions:

1. What is the topic about?

2. What examples or points can I use to describe or explain the topic sentence or idea?
